Appreciation of
variety of Bamboos
Viewing bamboos in Ge Yuan Garden is not
only a thing to find the scenery pleasing to both the eye and the mind but
also is a kind of profound and interesting learning. Bamboos are very
special, belonging neither to grass plant nor to wood plant. It belongs to
the grass family and bamboo subfamily in systematic botany. According to a
record, there are about over 50 genera and over 1300 kinds of bamboos in
the world. In China bamboo species distributed naturally have over 30
genera and over 500 kinds. They are divided into two kinds: the kind of
growing thickly and that of growing thinly. Yangzhou lies on Jianghuai
Plain, where it is suitable for planting bamboos of thin growth kind and a
few of cold resistant bamboos of thick growth. There are currently over 60
variety of bamboos in Ge Yuan Garden. From the angle of appreciation,
bamboos may be divided into pole-viewing type and leaf-viewing type.
Among the type for viewing bamboo poles, there is
difference in shape and color such as Tortoiseshell Bamboo, Square Bamboo
(Chimonobambusa Aqedrangularis “Feaze.” Makino), Spiral Joint Bamboo,
Buddha Belly Bamboo (Bambusa ventricosa McCl) Arahat Bamboo (Phyllostachys
aurea Carr.ex.A.et C. Riviere), Hot Chives Sword Bamboo and High Joint
Bamboo, which are planted for admiration of unordinary pole shapes, But
Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra “Lodd.” Munro) Strong Bamboo with
Yellow Skin, (Phyllostachys Sulphurea munro var. Virdis Young), Stong
Bamboo with Yellow Norch (Phyllostachys Sulphurea Var. virdis Young),
Little String Bamboo, Gold Spotted with Jasper Bamboo, Gold Inlaid with
Jade Bamboo, with Floral Mao Bamboo. Gold Bright Bamboo,
Crow-Feeding-Chick Bamboo With Yellow Skin, Feeding Chick Bamboo With
Flora Pole, Speckled Bamboo, Tea-Pole Bamboo (Pseudosasa Amabilis Mc Clue
Keng f.) and China Pink with Purple Cattail Head Bamboo are planted for
admiration of the color of bamboo poles.
Among the type for viewing bamboo leaves, there
are Indocalamaus latifolius (Keng) McCl, Big Bright Bamboo with Narrow and
Long Leaves, Arundinaria Fortunei (Van Houtte) Nakai, Ground-Paving Bamboo
and Buddha’s Warrior Attendants Bamboo. Besides, you can also find
silhouettes of other bamboo species of growing thinly such as East and
Comfort Bamboo, Sprout Bamboo, Bitter Bamboo (Pleioblastus amours ‘Keng’.
Keng), Red Bamboo, Tang Bamboo, Goose Wool Bamboo, Smooth Bamboo, and
Speckled Bitter Bamboo.
Before viewing bamboos, you’d better know some names
and classification of them, which may help you upgrade your level of
appreciation and increase your interest in them. Some people may say:
“What use is it to know those names? We haven’t seen those bamboos
yet. Here’s the knack. If you can memorize the names of variety of
bamboos, you are likely to guess their color, shape and even their
features by their names, then get into the garden and look for the right
bamboos with the aid of their names. This ensures that you can recognize
them one by one.”
