Corridor for Searching Lines of Poems

Standing here and looking west, one will find a winding corridor leading to a two storey tower. A horizontal tablet was hung, which reads: “Corridor for Searching Lines of Poems.” There were originally two corridors which served as walk ways in fine days and as shelters in raining days. In his work “A Tour to Ge Yuan Garden,” Chen Huangguang, the writer, said: “In a square courtyard of a high tower, one may watch stars in the sky.” But now there exists only a tower with Parts missing. In the couplet written on scrolls hung on corridor pillar on the first floor, Yuan Mei wrote: “The moon shines bright on bamboos, shadowing into one thousand Ge characters; Heavy frost covers branches of winter sweet, making it pregnant with abundant flowers.” Let’s look again at the two characters “Ge Yuan” above the moon gate and the flickering shadows on the white-washed wall. This is a real wonder and the word Ge is the best interpretation for the garden.
