Jasper set in Gold and Gold set in Jasper
Most of bamboos in the garden are like jasper set in gold and gold set in jasper. Their poles have beautiful color and leaves are like needles, being an excellent bamboo species for appreciation. The bamboo poles are golden with joints of green stripes which are described as gold set in jasper. The bamboo poles are green with joints of yellow stripes, which are describes as jasper set in gold.
Loving and filial bamboo (Bambuse Glaucesscens ‘willed’ sieb et Munro.) It grows thickly and its period of bamboo shoots falls in summer. New shoots draw close to old bamboo as if they obey the old teaching：“When one’s parents are alive, their sons and daughters will not be off to distant places.” As for old bamboos, they give support to the new ones so as to protect them from the attacks of wind and rain, making, them grow up safe and sound. Just as what Zheng Banqiao said, “New bamboos are taller than old ones, but they rely completely on the support given by their elders.” Owing to the climate there are few bamboos growing thickly in Ge Yuan Garden. There are only filial bamboos, fernleaf hedge bamboo and small string bamboo here.
