Living
in Seclusion
The harvest brought in by aesthetic level and
considerate plan in garden-building is that even indoors, spring will
certainly come to one’s teapot-like small world and all things big or
small remain calm, which was extracted from Records of Ge Yuan. This is
also the original intention of Huang Zhiyun. “Teapot-like small world”
and “dust and house” is originated from Taoists school’s phrase.
Later on they are frequently quoted by literati because of its idea
expressing the mood of indifference to secular affairs. In the
southernmost of bamboo view area is a long tower with a moon back door and
with double eaves. Flanking the tower are two winding corridors. Above the
gate is a horizontal tablet which reads “Living in seclusion.”
Standing in the corridor and looking north, what meets the eye is tall
bamboos around the garden, like a jasper forest. Strolling among green
bamboos, one feels the poetic scene:“Green
bamboos are on both sides of a quiet and long path, dark green satins
touch green robes.”
