One thousand mu of land along the Weihe River

On Engaging in Trade and Mining of the Records of the historian, Sima Qian, a great historian of Han dynasty, mentioned of a secular view popular in the society of the Han dynasty that “If one has one thousand mu of bamboo along the Weihe River, he will be as rich as a marquis of one-thousand households.” The allusion of one thousand mu of land along the Weihe River was derived from the above biography. As bamboo has been the symbol of property and status since ancient times, Huang Zhiyun, the commerce chief of Liang Huai Salt Industry, planted a large area of bamboo in his own garden and the name of his garden was related to bamboo. This is not only because of his tasteful hobby but also because of advertising his fortune and his honor.
